The value depends on the line's capacitance, which relates the charge and the voltage, and the line's inductance, measured in henries. Other properties, including conductance and resistance, can also affect impedance. At most frequencies, however, none of these other factors come into play.

  Divide the charge across the line by its voltage. If, for instance, the charge equals 0.08 coulombs and the voltage is 120 volts then 0.08 / 120 = 0.00066 farads.

  Divide inductance per meter by this capacitance. If the inductance is 12 henries per meter the formula is 12 / 0.00066 = 18,182.
- 3
  Find the square root of this answer: 18,182 ^ 0.5 = approximately 135. This is the line's impedance, measured in ohms.
